Security Situation Has Worsened

Dear Fellow Residents,

Many of you may not be aware that the security situation has worsened recently with a few incidents, which are:-

1.       Burglary / Break-in at a corner house in Jalan Desa Ria 2

2.       Break-in at a link house in Jalan Lingkungan Desa

3.       Break-in at a corner house in Jalan Desa Permai

4.       Break-in at a Bungalow House in Jalan Puncak Desa

5.       Attempted break-in at a corner house in Jalan Desa Permai

6.       Theft of shoes at several houses in Jalan Desa Damai (including our president house!)

7.       Snatch theft at main road of Jalan Desa Utama

8.       Attempted  break-in  at  the  junction  of Jalan Desa Damai / Desa Ria 1 for  which due to the alert Patrolling Officer  and a few Committee members, we managed to  cause the burglars to flee on foot, leaving  their stolen BMW car abandoned on the street.

The Modus Operandi of these break-ins were that the burglar strike during the late afternoon to evening session where the occupants have gone out to work or dinner, and the preferred time to strike is during heavy thunder-storms when most residents would have closed their doors and windows.

The lessons learnt from these incidents are that we must never let our guards down as these criminals will seize any opportunity at will to commit a crime. I suspect that these criminals had already studied the patterns of the residents’ houses for some time and marked these homes before acting once opportunity comes.

I am very sad to note that our affected residents have lost large sum of money, precious jewelries, sentimental items & heirlooms, branded goods, and important documents such as passports, birth certificate, PR visas and even spare keys to the house and cars.

Worst of all, the psychological impact of the affected residents who now feels violated, insecure and threatened will be hard to overcome. In the future, it would be sad to see that our fellow neighbours and their children may no longer feel safe walking out of their homes just to go to the Playground or for a walk around Taman Desa to exercise.

Yours sincerely,

Ng Yoke Mun

Secretary

Indeed a very sad situation. Please advice what has or can be done to improve the situation.

    1. TDP1RA’s plan to enhance the security level within the guarded community scheme by implementing Road Access Restriction and Wave Access Card System which are in the process of identifying contractors and table to the members during the proposed EGM on 12 August 2012 for approval.

Hopefully we will be able to implement the new measures as soon as possible.

    1. Dear PC Chua,

Some cases been reported and some not reported. Especially shoe theft incidents were not reported individually but the RA have submitted photo shot of the suspect which was obtained from the CCTV recording at our guard post.

  4. I am not surprise, since the TDRA1 security team is made up of incompetent and unprofessional personnels. I believe the situation will become worse. Are we going to let the security team further deteriorate or the committee is going to step up and do something to improve.

    1. What do you mean incompetent and unprofessional personnels? As far as I know professional guards are been paid between RM 3,000 to RM 6,000 per month. Do you think our guards are been paid that much?

Anyway hope the new measures that been planned to be implemented will improve the security level within our community.

Thanks to all the committee members whose tirelessness effort have help to improve the living quality within our community.

I am a victim of robbery prior to the present security system was implemented.

      Kudos

    2. I’ve spoken to some guards and it seems that some are part-timers, holding another job elsewhere. They took this job because “kakak cakap tak cukup orang. Jadi saya buat part time.” Are these guards, mainly ladies, properly trained to handle or tackle any untoward cases? Some are also living in the low-cost flats on Jalan Bahagia. I remember our previous president mentioning about permanently closing one entrance to prevent any ‘activities’ or parking that may result from those flats. Now, they are our guards? Hmmm…..

  5. Thanks for the update. Since I live along Desa Utama, I am lucky that my neighbour has a dog and he barks at any tom dick and harry that walks along the road or any vehicle that is parked nearby to its Master's house. This invariably alerts the neighbours inside the house to go and have "a look see" what is going on. Although we may remain vigilant and with the guard presence, we still need to instill the spirit of being good neighbours to deter crime. So what if people they think that we are "Kaypo chi" but at least the bad guys would be aware of people observing them and what tricks they may be up to. In Bangsar I was told that 2 men on motorcyles attacked some women outside 5 houses within a span of 1 hour just to steal jewellery and snatch their bags as they are closing the gate or alighting from the car to open the house gate. Please be careful out there stay alert.

  6. From my observation the guards are mainly ladies who do not even seem to wear uniforms, except one senior lady who is exceptionally committed to her duties both while guarding the boom gates as well as patrolling. I have not across guards in phase 1 stopping unknown vehicles to question the driver, I have even asked contractors and salesmen who called at my address who always that the guards just opened the gates without question. It is sad that paying residents have been subjected to losses through theft and robbery. It is high time that we residents, especially the committee acknowledge that the quality of the present security operations needs to be upgraded both in terms of procedures as well as robustness. I do acknowledge that the committee is trying its best and fully support all attempts towards progress and arrest the recent increase in infiltration of unwanted criminals within our area.

  7. I totally agree with the comment above (dated 4 Aug 2012) that the guards are mainly ladies. I've observed that there are days when 3 posts are guarded by ladies, one of whom has visual impairment (or if i'm wrong, sorry for it just appears that way). Furthermore, some have brought their young children to sit with them, or are napping either on their laps or in prams. Perhaps you should have a look at the cctv for details as recordings tell no lies (if they were not in the blind spot). And there you have comments above regarding robbery against ladies. So, how do lady guards ward off intruders when they themselves may be victims?

Even children have been spotted on the motorcycles when they are patrolling (or again if I'm mistaken, perhaps it was their off time?). Either ways, these do not paint a very pretty security picture. Patrolling means observing the surroundings for any suspicious activities but our patrol guards just whizzes by. A case of a prowler hiding behind the bushes will go unnoticed, and it has happened!

I am ALL for the security scheme and I want my neighbourhood to be safe. But frankly, I am tired of paying for what I see to be lackadaisical guards who seem to view their security duties as just gate openers. Please view my comments as suggestion for improvement for I am NOT against the scheme. However, if you wish to 'defend' the current state of guards, it's also entirely up to you. Again, thank you committee members for your work but do involve and genuinely know your neighbours in a friendly manner, not just speaking to them because you want them to pay up.

    2. I'm in favour of the security programme that's implemented in Taman Desa, but unfortunately I have to agree with 'anonymous'' complaint. Even outsiders can go in and out of the boom gates freely, so there's little point to them. Except maybe a slight deterrent to would-be criminals.

The good intent is there, but in my opinion, other measures should be taken.

      Just some thoughts:
      - If the residents within the boom gate allow, issue them passes, which they can use to enter and exit; and others maybe take down their details (ie number plate, ID etc)
      - Largely visible CCTVs that can capture the drivers' faces and license plates

And last but not least, many a time I've seen the guards asleep, only to be waken up by a honk. I understand they're only human, but discipline should be a priority for guards, shouldn't it?

I'll be at the meeting on 2nd Nov.
